When to Upgrade Your Launch Monitor, and What to Upgrade To

Posted in

The limit you hit every session may belong to the hardware or to the setup, and from the hitting mat the two look the same. Placement, software and plan problems cost far less to fix than a new unit. Below: how to tell them apart, then the paths owners take and what each costs.

In a Nutshell

Upgrade when you need data your unit can’t measure or it keeps misreading in your space after you’ve fixed placement. Owners who stepped from an entry unit to a camera-based or higher-tier one mostly call it a big jump; the SkyTrak+ to ST MAX step mostly isn’t.

👉 Rule out the cheaper fixes first, then use the table of owner upgrade paths to price the jump.

Jargon, once:

  • Spin axis / HLA — the tilt of the ball’s spin and its starting direction left or right; both shape the curve of the shot.
  • Camera-based (photometric) — a unit that photographs the ball at impact rather than tracking it with radar.

How this was built: makers’ pages read on 2 and 11 October 2026; owner and reviewer reports from Reddit, YouTube and Facebook groups since 2019. Nothing here was tested hands-on.

Five Signs the Limit Is the Hardware

  • It doesn’t measure what you need. The base Rapsodo MLM’s missing spin and direction data is a recurring reason owners returned it or switched (5 reports from 4 owners).
  • It misreads in your room, even after setup changes. Owners moving from the Garmin R10 to SkyTrak did it mainly to escape the R10’s placement needs and misreads in tight spaces such as garages (9 reports from 8 owners).
  • You’ve stopped trusting it. Owners give up on Voice Caddie’s SC4 and SC4 Pro after a frustrating stretch and move to a Mevo+, Eye Mini Lite, Square, SkyTrak or MLM2PRO (10 reports from 6 owners).

“Upgraded to an EML around 18 months ago and couldn’t be happier” (Reddit owner, 2026-05-01)

  • You’ve outgrown a starter unit. OptiShot 2 owners commonly outgrow its consistency and move to an R10, SkyTrak or Mevo+ (6 reports from 6 owners).
  • Your software wants club data you don’t have. Buyers find that face angle, impact location and face-to-path need a higher tier or different hardware (4 reports from 4 owners).

Try These Before You Spend

  • Placement and space. Many misreads come from the unit’s position, the distance to the ball or the room itself. Owners who left the R10 often did so because of a tight garage, so measure the room against the maker’s spacing figures before deciding the hardware is the problem. If the room can’t meet them, a unit with different placement needs is the real fix.

How much space do you need for a Golf Simulator?

  • Software and updates. By March 2026 owners and reviewers were welcoming Home Tee Hero course play on the R10 (3 reports from 3 owners and reviewers). Garmin’s page ties Home Tee Hero to a Garmin Golf membership, $99.99 a year as of 11 October 2026.
  • The plan you’re on. Some data sits behind a subscription tier rather than new hardware. Check what your maker’s higher plan unlocks before buying a new unit.

The Upgrade Paths Owners Take

Each row is a move owners describe, with the target’s maker price as of 11 October 2026 (US).

Notes on the targets:

  • Square: the Home Edition needs Square’s marked balls. The newer Omni reads ordinary balls, the main reason owners and reviewers cite for choosing it (4 reports from 4 owners and reviewers). It listed at $1,599.00 but showed sold out on Square’s site on 11 October 2026.
  • SkyTrak: SkyTrak’s site says the SkyTrak+ is no longer available; the ST MAX is the current unit.
  • EYE XO2: Uneekor lists it as ceiling-mounted and for indoor use only, so it stays in the room you mount it in and won’t come to the range.

Prices as read on 2–11 October 2026 and re-checked on 30 October 2026. They change often, so check before you buy.

Side-Steps That Aren’t Upgrades

  • SkyTrak+ to ST MAX. Owners and reviewers describe the ST MAX as the SkyTrak+ with refinements such as speed training and dual USB-C, with no gain in core accuracy (14 reports from 10 owners and reviewers).
  • The ST MAX against newer rivals. Some owners see it as falling behind cheaper, more modern units in 2026 (6 reports from 5 owners).
  • The R50 isn’t the end of the road for everyone. Some owners and reviewers traded it for a smaller or more accurate dedicated unit such as a GC3, a Uneekor or a ProTee VX, citing its bulk or an accuracy ceiling (4 reports from 4 owners and reviewers).

A move only counts as an upgrade if it fixes the limit you started with. If it doesn’t, keep the unit and spend on the room.

Match the Upgrade to Your Household

The right target depends on who swings in the room, not just on the data.

  • Left- and right-handed golfers. Moving a floor unit such as the GC3 to the other side of the ball for a left-handed player is a hassle owners keep flagging, and one owner regrets not buying an overhead unit for that reason (5 reports from 5 owners).
  • A radar option for mixed households. Owners recommend the FlightScope Mevo Gen2 for households that switch between left- and right-handed golfers, since radar doesn’t need repositioning (4 reports from 4 owners). FlightScope listed it at $1,299 on 11 October 2026.
  • Overhead units for shared setups. Reviewers single out the EYE XO2’s larger hitting area as useful when left- and right-handed players share one mat (4 reports from 4 reviewers).

Paying for It

  • Sell the old unit first, carefully. Check what your warranty and software licenses allow a buyer to inherit; several brands keep them with the first owner.

Buying a Used Launch Monitor or Simulator Without Getting Scammed

  • Price the new unit’s plan, not just the hardware. Check whether it needs a subscription for full data or course play.
  • Expect plans to change. By October 2023, Launch Pro owners were reporting that Bushnell had dropped its cheaper Basic tier for existing owners, breaking the GSPro link they relied on and pushing them to Gold (10 reports from 10 owners).

Launch Monitor Upgrade FAQ

Is the ST MAX an upgrade from a SkyTrak+?

Not much of one, by most accounts: owners and reviewers see refinements rather than better accuracy.

Should an R10 owner go to the R50?

Owners who did call it a clear step up. At $4,999.99 as of 11 October 2026, compare it with the camera units in the table first.

Can a software update replace an upgrade?

Sometimes. R10 owners gained Home Tee Hero course play through software, with a Garmin Golf membership, but no update adds a sensor the unit doesn’t have.

Is it cheaper to buy the better unit up front?

Some owners think so. OptiShot 2 owners who moved on within a couple of years note that buying twice cost more than buying the pricier unit first.

Is a Square a real upgrade from a SkyTrak?

Owners who switched say yes for spin and direction readings and for having no subscription. Check whether the Home Edition’s marked balls suit you, or look at the Omni, which reads ordinary balls.

What should happen to the old unit?

Sell it with its account released and software status stated, or keep it for outdoor range sessions if it works outside.

Final Thoughts

Name the limit first. If it’s placement, software or the plan you’re on, fix that and keep the money. If it’s the hardware, the owner paths above show where the jump is real and where it’s a side-step, and the household notes show which target fits the people who use the room. Price the new unit’s plan and sell the old one carefully before you buy.

Bushnell Launch Pro beside a golf ball as an iron strikes it

Bushnell Launch Pro vs SkyTrak ST MAX (2026)

Both units sit beside the ball, so neither needs the deep room a radar unit behind the golfer does. The split is the software each one lives on. The Launch Pro is a Bushnell camera unit that now runs on Foresight’s Foresight+ plans; the ST MAX is SkyTrak’s radar-and-camera unit, which replaced the SkyTrak+. Many…
