Buying a Used Launch Monitor or Simulator Without Getting Scammed

Posted in

A used launch monitor can save real money, but two things decide whether it does: whether the seller is genuine, and what stays behind with the first owner. Below: the scam patterns owners report, a check to run before paying, and each brand’s rules.

In a Nutshell

Buy used only after the serial checks out with the maker, the unit works in front of you, and the seller has released it from their account. Then price what doesn’t come with it: several brands keep the warranty with the first buyer, and most software licenses have their own transfer rules.

👉 Never pay a private seller by gift card, Zelle or PayPal friends-and-family: owners link all three to scams.

Jargon, once:

  • Certified pre-owned (CPO) — a used unit the maker has refurbished, tested and resold with its own warranty.
  • Deregister — the seller removes the unit from their maker account so the buyer can add it to theirs.
  • License — the right to run a piece of simulator software, often tied to one device, account or email.
  • Bundled license — software sold with the unit and tied to its serial number.

How this was built: makers’ warranty and license pages read in August 2026, with the SkyTrak, Rapsodo, Garmin and Uneekor warranty pages and Foresight’s transfer page re-read on 11 October 2026 and Uneekor’s license-transfer page on 6 October 2026; owner reports from Reddit since 2022. Nothing here was tested hands-on.

Scam Patterns to Spot First

Owners describe OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace listings for launch monitors as dominated by scammers (8 reports from 8 owners). The same tells come up again and again:

  • Photos that aren’t theirs. Photoshopped images, or the same photos used by several “sellers” in different cities.
  • A fake serial number. A serial that the maker’s support line doesn’t recognize.
  • A brand-new account with no reviews or history.
  • Payment that can’t be reversed: gift cards, Zelle, or PayPal friends-and-family.
  • Urgency. One Reddit user flags ads that press for a quick sale or claim a divorce as the reason for a low price.

“This is most definitely a scam. I have the same pictures and ad in Minnesota.” (Reddit user, 2025-05-19)

One owner filters marketplace searches to local pickup only and skips any listing that needs shipping.

How to Check a Used Unit Before You Pay

Owners give the same advice on checking a unit and seller before paying (6 reports from 6 owners):

  1. Insist on local pickup or, at the very least, a live video call with the unit running.
  2. Call the maker with the serial number. Ask whether it’s genuine and what warranty, if any, is left on it.

“I asked for serial number they sent a shady sticker” (Reddit user, 2024-05-14)

  1. Ask for a photo or video of the unit beside the seller’s name and today’s date, and check that name against their other social profiles.
  2. Hit balls with it. Owners advise testing it in person, extensively.
  3. Have the seller deregister it before money changes hands, then register it to your account on the spot. Owners describe SkyTrak’s version as taking seconds, at no cost (3 reports from 3 owners).
  4. Ask how hard it’s been used. SkyTrak’s new-unit warranty runs 6 months or 25,000 shots, whichever comes first, so shot count matters; one owner pointed to the app’s shot counter as the best guide available.
  5. Pay only after steps 1–6, with a method that offers buyer protection.

What Carries Over to a Second Owner, Brand by Brand

Warranty terms are the makers’ own; “Not stated on the page checked” means the page read didn’t say either way, so ask the maker before buying.

BrandWarranty on a new unitDoes it pass to a second owner?Software or account transfer
SkyTrak6 months or 25,000 shots, whichever comes firstNot stated on the page checkedOwners report the seller deregisters in seconds; SkyTrak’s own remaining plan time carries over, third-party plans don’t (2022 reports)
Rapsodo1 year, counted from device registrationNo: “not assignable or transferable to any subsequent purchaser”One owner says a lifetime plan can’t be transferred
Garmin1 year from purchaseNot stated on the page checked; the warranty covers only units first bought from Garmin or an authorized reseller, and Garmin may reject claims on units from unauthorized resellers, including internet sitesNot stated on the page checked
Uneekor2 years on overhead units (new or refurbished, bought from 1 January 2025); 1 year on other hardwareNo: “the warranties herein are not transferable”$100 per launch monitor and $50 per add-on, paid by the seller; licenses move only with the unit
Foresight (GC3S, QuadMAX)2 yearsNot stated on the page checkedOwnership transfer fee: $500 (GC3S) or $1,000 (QuadMAX), waived for buyers who already own a Foresight launch monitor; FSX software licenses don’t transfer
Bushnell Launch Pro1 yearNot stated on the page checked; one owner says Foresight repaired a used unit under its remaining warrantyForesight lists a $250 ownership-transfer fee for the Launch Pro
Full Swing KIT12 months from deliveryYes: the remaining time passes to the new owner, never extendedNot stated on the page checked
Trackman12 months from delivery; void if the unit is openedNot stated on the page checkedNot stated on the page checked
FlightScope12 monthsNot stated on the page checkedNot stated on the page checked
ProTee1 year, original purchaser onlyNo: non-transferableOwners report TGC 2019 licenses can no longer be transferred

Opening or tampering with a unit voids the warranty at SkyTrak, Square and Trackman, so ask whether it has ever been opened or repaired outside the maker.

Software Licenses: the Cost Buyers Miss

The launch monitor is only half of a working simulator. Check the software before making an offer:

  • Uneekor: the subscription moves only with the launch monitor it belongs to, and bundled licenses must move with it. The seller pays $100 per launch monitor and $50 per add-on, and both of you need Uneekor accounts.
  • E6 Connect: each license binds to one device. The original owner unbinds it through the E6 portal before the sale.

“I dont have access to the included e6 software license” (Reddit owner, 2024-10-09)

  • GSPro: its terms forbid selling or transferring an account, so plan on buying your own license.
  • Foresight: ownership transfer costs $250 (Launch Pro), $500 (GC3, GC3S) or $1,000 (GCQuad, QuadMAX, Falcon, GCHawk), waived for owners of a Foresight launch monitor or of a Foresight product worth more than the fee. FSX software licenses don’t transfer.
  • ProTee and TGC 2019: owners say a license transfer that used to cost a one-time fee is no longer allowed (3 reports from 2 owners). A used ProTee setup may need the seller’s account kept running, or new software.

Launch Monitor Subscriptions Compared (2026): True Cost and No-Subscription Options

If the seller can’t show which licenses come with the unit, value it as hardware only and add the cost of the software you’ll need.

Certified Pre-Owned vs a Private Sale

A refurbished unit from the maker comes with a warranty in the buyer’s name, which a private sale often doesn’t.

Maker programWarranty on the refurbished unit
SkyTrak Certified Pre-Owned90 days
Rapsodo Certified Refurbished MLM2PRO1 year, plus a 30-day money-back guarantee
FlightScope Mevo Certified Pre-Owned12 months
Uneekor refurbished overhead units2 years, the same as new (units bought from 1 January 2025)

For a beginner, a maker’s refurbished unit removes most of the risk in this guide. A private sale only makes sense when the saving still covers the software you’ll buy and the warranty you won’t get.

Where to Buy, and Where Sellers List

  • Protected marketplaces first. Owners recommend eBay or an established used-golf retailer such as 2nd Swing over a private Facebook or OfferUp sale with no recourse (3 reports from 3 owners).
  • Check a retailer’s warranty for electronics. 2nd Swing’s posted 90-day warranty reads as written for clubs; ask whether it covers a launch monitor before relying on it.
  • Test retailer stock too. Two owners report used GC2 units from a reseller with Bluetooth that didn’t work, though other buyers say their used units worked fine.

“the bluetooth never worked, it only worked when plugged in” (Reddit buyer, 2024-06-01)

  • Enthusiast channels. Sellers are pointed to r/golfclassifieds, Facebook golf-sim-for-sale groups, Golf Simulator Forum and the GSPro Discord, where owners say a unit can sell in about a week (2 reports from 2 owners).

Expect steep depreciation if you sell later: owners report lowball offers on simulator gear (3 reports from 3 owners).

Used Launch Monitor FAQ

Does the warranty transfer to a second owner?

It depends on the brand. Full Swing passes the remaining time to a second owner. Rapsodo, Uneekor and ProTee say their warranties don’t transfer, and Garmin covers only units bought from Garmin or an authorized reseller. Ask the maker with the serial number.

Can a buyer keep using the seller’s software subscription?

Rarely as-is. Uneekor moves it for a fee paid by the seller, E6 needs the original owner to unbind it, and GSPro accounts can’t be sold.

Is a certified pre-owned unit worth the extra cost?

For most buyers, yes: the maker tests it and the warranty is yours, from 90 days at SkyTrak to 2 years on Uneekor’s overhead units.

How do buyers avoid paying a scammer?

Meet in person or test on a live video call, check the serial with the maker, and never pay by gift card, Zelle or PayPal friends-and-family.

What if the seller won’t deregister the unit?

Walk away. Without the release you may not be able to register it, and the seller still controls the account.

Final Thoughts

A used launch monitor is a good buy when the serial, the test session and the account release all check out, and when the price still wins after you add the software and the warranty you won’t inherit. If any of the three fails, a maker’s refurbished unit is the safer path.
