Golf Simulator Packages vs Building Your Own: Which Is Better Value?

A golf simulator package bundles a launch monitor, enclosure or net, screen, mat and sometimes a projector at one price. Below: what five packages leave out, three priced against the same parts bought separately, and what owners say.

In a Nutshell

Neither route wins on price every time: owners called PlayBetter’s roughly $4,000 SimStudio package fair value and Foresight’s Sim in a Box overpriced against its parts. Buy a package for one checkout, one seller and a fast build; build your own for choice, later upgrades and usually a lower bill.

👉 Every package below is missing a part a full simulator needs, from the computer to the frame pipes, so read the contents before the price.

Jargon, once:

  • Package — a retailer’s bundle of simulator parts sold at one price.
  • Enclosure — the frame, surround and impact screen that catch the ball.
  • EMT — the steel electrical conduit most enclosure frames are built from.
  • Compare-at price — the struck-through “was” figure on a sale listing.

How this was built: makers’ and retailers’ pages read on 2–3 October 2026 and re-checked on 11 October 2026; makers’ manuals read in August 2026; owner and reviewer reports from Reddit and YouTube since 2022. Nothing here was tested hands-on.

Where the Struck-Through Price Comes From

At Shop Indoor Golf, the struck-through figure is a compare-at price, not what the parts cost today. Some parts are on sale on their own, so part of the headline saving exists without the bundle.

Example: on 11 October 2026 the SkyTrak ST MAX SIG10 package with a 5 × 5 ft mat was $3,999.99, struck through from $5,145. The ST MAX alone was $1,695 on sale (list $2,995), and a SIG10 enclosure $1,599.99 on sale (was $1,999.99). Together:

  • $1,695 + $1,599.99 = $3,294.99, or $705 less than the package.

The package adds the mat and landing turf; price those too before calling either side cheaper.

A package can outlive its launch monitor. On 11 October 2026 PlayBetter still listed a SkyTrak+ COMPLETE package at $2,995, though SkyTrak’s own page says the SkyTrak+ is no longer available. Check that the bundled monitor is still sold and supported.

When a Package Is the Better Value

  • Fair price, owner-judged: shoppers set PlayBetter’s roughly $4,000 SimStudio against itemized parts and mostly called it a fair-to-good deal (6 reports from 4 owners).
  • Fast, tool-light assembly: reviewers describe the SimStudio as snap-together, and one builder timed the cage frame at about 45 minutes. Earlier Sim in a Box kits drew praise for build quality and solo assembly in about 2.5 hours (9 reports from 9 owners and reviewers).
  • Professional setup: Shop Indoor Golf’s $4,999.99 assembly and setup service is sold only with its own package or enclosure, and covers calibration and a walkthrough.
  • One payment plan: PlayBetter showed a 0% APR Affirm offer on its Square package, subject to approval; Carl’s Place finances through Bread Pay. Read the APR and term before signing.

When Building It Yourself Is the Better Value

  • Savings: owners report DIY installs saving thousands against turnkey builds, some putting it at $5,000 to $20,000 (9 reports from 8 owners).
  • Sim in a Box pricing: owners often call it overpriced against the same setup bought part by part (6 reports from 6 owners). One owner put it as “You’ll save a couple grand getting it all on your own” (May 2025).
  • The bundled computer: owners of Sim in a Box tiers that came with a PC report upgrading it soon after buying (5 reports from 5 owners).
  • Markup on basics: builders say branded kits charge heavily for fabric, cable and padding they can source themselves (5 reports from 4 owners).
  • Choice and upgrades: DIY builders value picking each part and swapping one later (3 reports from 3 owners).

Golf Simulator Budget Builds: Five Builds Priced Part by Part, From $1,600 to $24,000 (2026)

What Building It Yourself Really Costs

  • Time: owners report 20 to 30 or more hours of labor, and some regret underestimating it (4 reports from 4 owners).
  • Cutting your own frame: buying EMT at a hardware store instead of a pre-cut kit saves owners roughly $500 or less (3 reports from 3 owners and reviewers). Self-cut poles can fit less precisely, too. One Carl’s Place buyer who cut the conduit with a pipe cutter called it “Huge mistake if you don’t have a band saw.” (September 2025).
  • Stage it: owners on a budget suggest starting with the launch monitor, mat and net, then adding the screen, projector and enclosure later (5 reports from 4 owners).

The cheapest package undercuts the parts build but swaps in a different mat; it sold out on 11 October 2026 and was back in stock on 21 October. Owners warn against cutting cost there, since a cheap mat can mean wrist and elbow pain (3 reports from 3 owners).

The Middle Route: An Enclosure Kit Plus Your Own Parts

Many builders buy the enclosure as a kit and choose everything else:

  • Shop Indoor Golf Custom DIY enclosure, $1,260.99: every part of a full SIG enclosure except the 1-inch EMT frame, which you supply.
  • Carl’s Place DIY enclosure, as low as $999.95: 8 × 8 ft with the Standard screen.
  • Rain or Shine simDIY Kit, $1,499: 8 × 10.5 ft.
  • SIG8 enclosure, $1,439.99 on sale (was $1,799.99): frame poles, screen and foam padding included. SIG’s manual lists no tools beyond a step stool or ladder.

Questions to Ask Before You Buy a Package

  • Which launch monitor model ships? PlayBetter’s Square listing doesn’t name the Square model.
  • Is there a computer, and is it strong enough? None of the five above includes one.
  • Will the projector fit your room? PlayBetter’s SimStudio manual puts the projector about 9.5 ft or more from the screen when a computer drives it. Owners report the bundled projector is hard to dial in (6 reports from 4 owners).
  • What is the mat? Buyers flag that PlayBetter discloses little beyond basic specs (3 reports from 2 owners).
  • What voids the warranty? PlayBetter’s manual says improper setup of the enclosure or screen does.
  • Who installs it? Rain or Shine lists install tiers from $500 to $4,999.
  • What will it resell for? Sellers report getting far less than hoped for used simulator gear (3 reports from 3 owners).

Golf Simulator Package FAQ

Is a golf simulator package cheaper than buying the parts?

Sometimes. Spornia’s R10 bundle cost $459.98 less than the closest parts build but uses a different mat (back in stock on 21 October 2026 after selling out earlier in the month); PlayBetter’s Square package cost $1,326.01 more but adds an enclosure and turf.

Do golf simulator packages include a computer?

None of the five checked does. Foresight’s Play 10 ft kit includes a computer cart, not a computer, and Carl’s EYE MINI CORE listing says the package requires one.

Can you upgrade a package?

Some upgrades are offered at checkout: PlayBetter lists a GT2300HDR projector for $500 more on its Square package.

Is professional installation worth paying for?

It depends on your time. Shop Indoor Golf charges $4,999.99 with its own package or enclosure; owners who built their own report 20 to 30 or more hours.

What does the struck-through price on a package mean?

It is the seller’s compare-at price, not what the parts cost today, so compare against the parts’ sale prices on the same day.

Final Thoughts

Price the parts on the same day as the package, and add the computer and any missing frame pipes to both sides. Buy the bundle when one seller and a quick build matter more than choosing each part.
